54 – The Old Man From The Countryside Exchanges Blows

“DouRRiiieeEEE…!”

This was the Knight Order of Revelio’s training grounds.

The sun has just risen, the day has just begun, but even so, we’ve got more than a handful of people working hard with their training.

I’m usually aware that I come in early but the knights here are still pretty enthusiastic.
I think that such a diligent attitude towards their training should be praised properly.

“Oh yeah, you’re getting better!” I said, complimenting my opponent as I dodged the edge of the sword being swung vigorously.

I’m currently practicing with said knights in a mock battle.

If you take each other seriously, an accident could happen, so we only use wooden swords.
I’m also only armed with them right now.

But once I proposed that we take this practice seriously, I may be caught up in the battle frenzy of the sword.

I don’t want to feel that particular tingling sensation if possible but on the other hand, so long as I’m a person who throws myself into live battles, I think that I should experience it every once in a while.
Unlike the Adventurers, I don’t think the Knights are so blessed with opportunities for live battle.

If you can’t swing your sword in an emergency, it’ll be a problem for the Knights.
I’ll make the suggestion to Alexia next time.
I feel like it’s going to be rejected.

“NNNNYUUUMMM…!”

“Woops.”

Oops, I didn’t see that coming.
I shouldn’t think in the middle of training.

The strike seemed to have had force several times heavier than my wooden sword, it grazes the tip of my nose.
Yes, I told them to swing without restraint, but it’s a little chilling.

However: though a big attack is powerful, it gives your opponent a chance to counter.

They’re still developing but as I can see their growth, I can have a bit of fun while teaching them.

“Hoi,” I said.

“Ngyuh?!”

After I dodged the swing, I light smack my wooden sword on my opponent’s head.

Perhaps because of the shock, she let out an adorable scream.

“Alright, let’s finish here,” I said, dropping my combat stance.
“You’re getting better little by little.”

“Honestly?! Ehe, ehheehe…” Kuruni said, rubbing her head and breaking out in a happy smile.

Well, she’s a dog.
Kuruni is healing, after all.

However, by no means is her form complete right now.
In order to further improve her skills, it’s necessary to clearly convey what she has done right and what she has not.

“You’re getting used to handling it, and I think that your swing speed is good enough,” I said.
“However, if you keep swinging it the same way, you’ll naturally expose a gap.
And I hit you through that vulnerability, as before.”

“Uuuh, I got it…” Kuruni said, her expression cloudy.

But, I’m not pessimistic.
I didn’t expect her to handle a zweihander, a weapon that requires such raw strength, in such a short period of time.
It’s a pleasant miscalculation.

I think she was a power type from the start and didn’t have much trouble with the mass and weight of a zweihander from the start.
She’s swinging around a wooden sword right now but that lump of wood is quite heavy.
In this case, she should be able to demonstrate her strength without any problems even if she wasn’t taking it seriously.

All that aside, her learning is quick.

She’s got a straightforward personality, so it’s great that she can absorb my teachings straightforwardly as well.

Of course, it’s undeniable that she’s still rough, but she’s grown so much that she can push through with raw strength and reach if against a regular swordsman. 1 That’s why she’s practicing with me.

Of course, these results are from the foundations of Kuruni’s physical fitness, which she’s been honing for a long time.
This is the best proof that she continued to train well after leaving my dojo.

A series of superior-reach attacks from such a petite body.

She can make small turns and do them fast.
After that, if she learns more practical push-pull strategies and tricks, she’ll get even stronger.

“Don’t be ashamed,” I said.
“You’re getting stronger, Kuruni.”

“Ro-Roger-dodger!” Kuruni said.

There’s no lie in my words.

At least she’s better than with the shortsword.
This was enough to make me think that her near future is going to be very exciting.

“Oh, that’s right, Master!” Kuruni said cheerfully.
“Isn’t it about time?”

“Huh? Time for what?” I asked.

What’s about to happen? I wonder if there were any plans.
I didn’t plan or promise for anything other than training here.

“Your sword, Master!” Kuruni said.

“… Ah,” I said.

I remember now.
I also admitted that I forgot.

By the way, has it been so long already? When I repeated the training every day, I just forget about time.
I don’t want to blame my age.

“It’s been a week already, huh?” I said.
“Then I have to go.”

“Right?!” Kuruni said.
“I’m so excited to see it.”

I was used to going around without a sword.
I’m not in a very good place as a professional swordsman.
Maybe it was because I had the wooden sword instead.

Valder, who was in charge of forging my sword, told me he wanted a week.
The deadline has passed a little while ago so it’s time to go claim it.

And on that note, it’s been a week without getting any new info about Miu’s case.

During that time, it seemed that Alexia and Lucy played a central role in interrogating Twilight and his subordinates, but I haven’t heard about any specific progress.

I knew they had strained expressions when we discussed a handful of things about it, but it wasn’t a topic I wanted to get into.
Judging from those faces, I could predict that things weren’t going so simply.

However, there’s nothing I can do.
They probably didn’t bother to share any info with me because they knew that, too.

Ah, well, this isn’t the jurisdiction of my job, it’s up to the big names.

This work is more important to me than that.

“Let’s go take a look at the end of today’s training, then,” I said.

It’s good not to hurry, but this swordsman’s honest feeling is that I want to get it soon if it’s completed.
Let’s head out today.

“Oh, then I’ll got with you, too!” Kuruni said.

“Hmm, I don’t mind,” I said.

Ah, well, I’ve got no reason to decline but I don’t think she had any reason to come.

“Mmfufu, Master’s sword, I’m looking forward to seeing it,” Kuruni says with a smile on her face.

For some reason, she’s getting excited, thinking of it like it’s a party.
I don’ think it’s that exciting of an event for others.

For the moment, it’s better than her being in a bad mood.
Kuruni was a girl who always looked so cheerful.

Besides, I certainly don’t know what kind of sword was forged.

It was made out of the corpse and materials of the Named, Xeno Glaive.
To be honest, it’s completely unpredictable.

I’m looking forward to it and I’m a little worried.
I’m fine with moderation.
Because I myself am a moderate.

“Well, anyway, after today’s training is over,” I said.

“Yessir!” Kuruni said.

Now then, let’s resume training after a short break.

It’s no wonder that I’m excited about new things, but we’re also a knight and her mentor.
I want to wield my sword honestly, you know.

“Swooord up,” I said.

“Ready to go!” Kuruni said, wielding her large wooden sword.

Looking at how her eyes sparkle, her excitement is a little higher than before.
She was excited enough before that.

I’m not going to get hit by a big wooden sword like that, even in a mock battle.
I’m going to have to get myself together and practice again.

Footnotes

For context, even in friendly demonstrations or choreographed shows, the sheer force and length of a zweihander are enough to keep opponents well back and bend their swords after one or a couple of hits to the blade.
Kuruni would have little issue overpowering a single foe with a longsword, assuming they’re of average skill.
