Great spirit of the forest

As soon as I put away the rock that served as the bedroom door, Bell and Rain charged at me as if they had been waiting for it.
I hastily caught them and tried to ask what was going on, but before that, the excited Bell started talking.

“Yuuta, you see, it sprouted!”

“Kyuuuu!”

Ah, I see.
That’s why Bell and Rain are so high-strung.

“Both Bell’s and Rain’s have sprouted!”

“Kyuuuu!”

“Wow, that’s amazing.
Let’s go see them right away.”

“Hurry!”

“Kyuu!”

Bell pulled my hand while Rain pushed my back as we headed towards the fields.
When we arrived, we saw Dyne, Nomos, and Turu looking at the fields as well.

“Oh, good morning Yuta.
They’ve sprouted!”

“Yeah, not bad for their growth.”

“…it sprouted.”

“Good morning everyone.
Can you guys show me?”

We directed our gaze to the field, and there was a striking green sprout even though it was small.
Even in a place where there are no plants at all, small ones stand out.
I squatted down and observed it closely.

The thin, almost transparent stem and the adorable little leaves, split into two, were heartwarming.
When was the last time I was moved by growing a plant? Maybe when I was younger.
It might have been since elementary school.

“Yeah, yeah.
There’s definitely a plant growing in the Field of Death.”

“Yuuta, look! This is the one Bell planted.”

“Kyu kyu!”

Bell and Rain proudly showed me the sprouts that grew from the seeds they buried.
I happily petted them, including the joy of germination.

“But, it really did sprout.”

I had hoped it would germinate, but seeing it actually happen was surprising.
After all, the land was barren.

“It’s all thanks to you, Yuta.
Among those who tried to develop the Field of Death on a large scale, you are the first to have grown green in a long time.
You can be proud of yourself.”

“That’s right.
They were barely getting any harvests.
You can hold your head up high.”

“…amazing.”

Dyne, Nomos, and Turu praised me.
It made me quite happy.

“Hmm? Speaking of which, where is Sylphy?”

Normally, she would have praised me immediately.

“As soon as Sylphy confirmed that the sprouts had appeared, she went to meet the forest spirit.
It’s a harsh environment, so the sprouts may not grow properly.
She probably didn’t want to let them wither away.”

I see.
I’ve been helped by Sylphy a lot.
I want to thank her, but… I can’t think of anything other than alcohol.
Is there something else that would make her happy?

“I see.
That’s appreciated.
When will she be back?”

“Hmm, I can’t be certain since it depends on the other party, but they should be back by midday,” Nomos replied.

“Yes, that’s right.
Sylphy was very enthusiastic, so they may even come back earlier,” add Dyne.

It was nice to see Sylphy happy like that, and I felt genuinely pleased.

“By the way, Rain, did you finish watering the plants?”

“Kyu.”

Rain shook her head.

“Could you spray the water like a mist, as before, so as not to damage the sprouts by directly hitting them with water droplets?”

“Kyu.”

Rain nodded, so it was okay.
It seemed like the other types of seeds haven’t sprouted yet, so there’s still plenty of excitement to come.

After Rain finished watering, we had breakfast together with Bell, Rain, and Turu.
Although the seafood was the same as usual, the vegetables were becoming a more realistic scenario, and my excitement rose.

If the forest spirit comes, maybe they could help accelerate the growth.
Then we could have green vegetables for dinner! I was getting excited about it.

After finishing the meal, I looked around the farm again and Bell informed me that Sylphy was approaching.
That was quick.
We decided to greet them at the front of the farm.
When I spotted Sylphy, I waved my hand enthusiastically.

“I’m home, Yuta!”

“Welcome back, Sylphy.
I’m glad you went to pick her up quickly.
Is that forest spirit over there?”

“Yes, that’s right.
Her name is Dolly.”

“Nice to meet you.
I am Dolly, the forest’s Great Spirit.
This little one is a forest minor spirit who came with me this time.
You must be Yuta.
Nice to meet you,” said the forest Great Spirit, elegantly bowing.
Her straight green hair flowed gracefully.
It was silky smooth.
The delicate, beautiful girl smiled gently with a kind gaze, giving off an air of a sheltered young lady.

And the forest minor spirit she brought with her was too much.
It was cheating.
The fluffy body fur was so soft and fluffy, and the tail was particularly impressive.
The fur color was close to gold, and it glistened with a sheen.
The fox cub looked up at me with it´s round eyes.
It was so cute that it could be too much to handle.
I wanted to hug it.

“Yuta?”

“Oh, sorry.
I’m Yuta Morizono.
Please call me Yuta.”

“Hehe, it’s okay to talk normally.
I’ve heard about you from Sylphy.
You don’t need to use honorifics with me, either.
And please don’t mind me using them; it’s just a habit,” the forest Great Spirit said with a smile.

“I see.
Well then, Dolly, thank you for coming.
You really helped me out.”

“Dolly.
Nice to see you again,” bell said.

“Kyu.”

“No, no.
I was interested after hearing about Yuta from Sylphy, so it’s no problem.
Bell-chan, Rain-chan, it’s nice to see you again.
You did a great job with your task, and you’re both so admirable,” the forest Great Spirit said.

“Hehe,” Bell giggled.

“Kyu.”

Wow.
Bell and Rain were both smitten.
The power of a sheltered young lady was truly fearsome.
Or perhaps it was the negative ion effect of a forest spirit that could be expected.

Bell and Rain, who became interested in the young fox, rush over and embrace it, saying “fluffy, fluffy.” How envy-inducing.

“Dolly-chan, it’s been a while.
How have you been?” Suddenly, Dyne appears and hugs Dolly, rubbing her cheek against hers.
Are they good friends?

“Ah, you’re here.
I was waiting,” says Nomos.

Both Nomos and Turu have arrived.
Turu seems a bit uneasy, so I guide him towards the young fox.
Turu approaches the young fox cautiously and slowly enjoys petting it.
Lucky him.

“Dyne, Nomos, it’s been a while.
I’m doing well.
I heard you guys are having fun too,” says Dolly.

“Hehe, we’re having a blast.
It’ll be even more fun now that Dolly-chan is here,” Dyne giggles.

“Hmm, never a dull moment,” Nomos adds.

“Dolly, let’s catch up later.
We came here in a hurry because we need to check on the field.
We don’t want the crops to wither,” says Slyphy.

Oh right, I forgot.
Checking on the crops is the most important thing.

“I’m sorry, I completely forgot,” says Dolly.

She checks the field, gently touching the sprouts and examining the soil.
It’s nerve-wracking just watching her.

“The crops are growing properly.
The soil balance isn’t ideal, but these plants are a strong breed that can withstand harsh conditions.
They should grow without any issues,” says Dolly.

Oh, they should be ok to eat.
I was just amazed by the sprouts sprouting from the seeds, and now all I can think about is eating them.

“That’s great.
Is there anything we should be aware of?” I ask, and after a brief pause, she gives me an answer.

“Although they are strong in harsh conditions, there are still limits.
Please be careful not to let the soil dry out or become too moist,” Dolly warns.

“I’ve asked Rain to take care of the watering.
She sprays mist-like water to keep the soil moist.
Can you confirm it later?” Yuta replies.

“Sure, I’ll join you,” she say, relieved that I don’t have to figure out the water amount.

“In that case, Dolly can stay here, right?” Nomos asks.

“Yes, the environment here is suitable for plant growth, so it’s possible to stay.
However, this field has its limits, and we need an environment where we can grow more plants.
Also, there’s one more condition.
I’ll tell you about it if you can create an environment for growing more plants,” Dolly explains.

Ah, as expected of Nomos.
I’m glad I prepared a space where a forest can be grown as he suggested.

“In that case, Dolly, we’ve already created a space for a forest to grow.
Can you check it out?” I ask.

“O-Oh, already created? That’s wonderful,” Dolly says.

I guide Dolly to the south of the base where the forest is planned.

“Here it is.
It might be a bit small for a forest, but please forgive us,” I say.

“Well, there’s a spring in the center.
Also, this soil is very similar to the soil in the field.
It seems that there are slightly fewer microorganisms… but it should be okay,” Dolly responds.

Good response.
If this doesn’t work, I don’t know what will.
The microorganisms will increase over time since we just mixed the soil.

“I see.
Since there’s no problem, can you tell us about the final condition?” I ask.

“Yes.
The final condition is not to give up on developing this land.
After hearing Sylphy’s story, I got the feeling that if you go to town, you might not come back.
You’ve worked so hard up to this point, so please continue to develop this land.
What do you think?” Dolly explains.

I never intended to give up.
But what does it mean not to give up on developing this land? It’s impossible to fully devote myself to developing this land.
I want to enjoy this new world too.

“Hey, Sylphie.
How long does it take to get to the nearest town once we’re able to go?”

“Well, let me see.
With me carrying Yuta, it would take about three hours to get to the closest town.
But Bell and the others won’t be able to keep up.
Anywhere on this continent can be reached within half a day though.”

Wow, high wind spirits are amazing.
They can even carry me and still be faster than Bell.
But with that kind of speed, I can come back here anytime.

“Sylphie is amazing.”

“Well, of course.
You shouldn’t underestimate the Wind Spirits.”

Yeah, that smug expression is acceptable.
It’s just too impressive that she can travel across this continent in half a day.

“Oh, Dolly.
I have no intention of giving up this land, but I also have no intention of putting all my efforts into developing it.
I plan to enjoy the other world while making up for what this land lacks.
So, the pace of development will be slow, and the range won’t expand unless it’s necessary.”

“If you’re willing to continue developing this land little by little without abandoning it, that’s not a problem.
I will stay here to assist you.”

The forest spirit and the charming fluffy child fox spirit have become companions.
