The sky was clear, the wind was pleasant; this was the second day of filming for《Lost》.
Yan Qing Chi was sitting in a chair as he watched Jiang Mo Chen—in his civilian clothes movie costume—acting in a scene with the second male lead Zhou Fang.
Ji Si Xing, the actor playing as Zhou Fang, had entered the popularity circle last year.
He was 28 years old this year, a completely perfect fit with Zhou Fang’s age.
At this moment, he wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses and was unperturbed as he answered He Yu’s questions.

“Cut!” The director yelled loudly, “Ji Si Xing, your emotions aren’t right.
You’re too tense, be more natural.
In the movie, you and Jiang Mo Chen are existences who are evenly matched.1 Right now you’re too obviously suppressed by him.”

“Okay.” Ji Si Xing nodded.
As he nodded, he apologized to Jiang Mo Chen, “Sorry, Chen-ge. Your acting is too outstanding, so I’m a little nervous.”

“It’s fine, relax.
Your condition at the very beginning wasn’t bad.”

“Okay.” Ji Si Xing said and adjusted his mindset before he started acting again with Jiang Mo Chen.

As Yan Qing Chi watched their back-and-forth interaction, he was actually eager to give acting with Jiang Mo Chen a try..2 But his scenes were few, and his ‘star’ status in the entertainment industry was not high enough.3 Moreover, he had concealed his relationship with Jiang Mo Chen, simply stating that he was a newcomer.
Thus, he could only sit on a wooden stool and wait for who-knows-how-long before it was his turn.

There was an actress waiting with him, her name was Su Nuan.
She played a literature teacher who liked Zhou Fang and helped supply his alibis several times.

She looked at Yan Qing Chi and asked, “Are you playing as Meng Luo?”

Yan Qing Chi hadn’t thought that someone would suddenly talk to him.
As soon as he turned his head, he saw her scoot her stool over next to him and shoot him a smile.

Yan Qing Chi nodded, “What about you?”

“I play Liu Jia Ni.”

“Oh oh, Zhou Fang’s girlfriend.” Yan Qing Chi pointed towards Ji Si Xing who was nearby.

Su Nuan wrinkled her nose in distaste4, “How could she be considered as a girlfriend? She’s only a tool who is being used.”

That was a pretty apt description.
After all, the reason why Zhou Fang agreed to go out with Liu Jia Ni was to use her as part of his plan to exonerate himself from the murders.
It had nothing to do with any feelings of love.

“However, I’m very pleased to be able to obtain this role.
Except, seeing Ji Si Xing struggle to act opposite of Jiang Mo Chen, I feel like I will probably follow the same fate.”

“It’s okay, you can always practice more.”

“I will.
I’ve even taken a lot of notes on Director Wang’s words because I was afraid of making the same mistakes.” Su Nuan hastily replied.

“Then you’re quite diligent.”

“I can’t not be diligent,” Su Nuan was kind of troubled, “This circle, first, depends on your background; second, depends on your connections; and third, depends on your fame—if you have these three things, then you would obtain good resources.
I don’t have any of these.
Besides, if I’m not diligent, then I will never make a name for myself in this lifetime.” At this point, she leaned in closer to Yan Qing Chi and said, “Speaking of which, in this cast and crew, the way I look at it, it seems like we’re the only two who don’t have anything.”

Yan Qing Chi gave her a quizzical look.

Su Nuan further explained, “Those who are playing the victims—I’m talking about Meng Wen, Xu Jiao, Master Li—these middle-aged actors and actresses are all veteran actors invited by the director to make a cameo.
As for the youths, there’s no need to talk about Jiang Mo Chen—that’s a newly awarded film emperor; the whole film is counting on him.
It’s been said that there’s also a patron backing Ji Si Xing.
Zhao Qiang, who’s playing the female lead, is at the prime of her popularity.
She is a young, popular female celebrity.
But only the two of us, I searched in Baidu and couldn’t find anything about either of us.
There’s nothing there even if you looked for it.”

Yan Qing Chi, the legal spouse of the “Newly Awarded Jiang Mo Chen”: ……In times like this, it’s probably best to just smile.

Seeing him smile, Su Nuan thought that he was just as helpless as she was.
She promptly encouraged him, “It’s okay, I looked at the role of Meng Luo.
It has appealing points.
Moreover, you’re attractive.
You will definitely become popular when this movie is released.”

“You as well.”

“Hopefully.
But Liu Jian Ni’s character is not impressionable.5 I’m satisfied with being able to make my face appear on the screen.
Oh, oh.
That’s right.
I came to find you because I wanted to ask you if you could run-through some lines with me? I tried earlier to find Ji Si Xing when he wasn’t busy, but he wasn’t very willing.
It makes sense, he is in the prime of his popularity so his time is very valuable.
So I scanned through the whole cast, the two of us are the most obscure.
You probably don’t have anyone to rehearse with you either, right? I can help you too.
Is that okay?”

“Sure.” Yan Qing Chi wasn’t against it.
Besides, he had plenty of time.
He would be making two gains with one move.
There was no harm in it.

“Then let’s go try it out after we finish watching Jiang Mo Chen’s scene.”

“OK.”

The two of them turned back to watch Jiang Mo Chen and Ji Si Xing act.
Su Nuan unwittingly sighed, “Jiang Mo Chen is so handsome.”

Yan Qing Chi glanced at her, “You like him?”

“Well, duh.
What girl doesn’t like Jiang Mo Chen? He’s handsome, gentle, and his acting is excellent.
Furthermore,” Su Nuan returned his gaze with a mysterious expression, “rumor has it that Jiang Mo Chen’s background is especially good.
Like, the kind where his family owns a mine.
He could go back and inherit his family company at any time.”

Yan Qing Chi thought about it, ‘This rumor is actually pretty accurate.’

Su Nuan said girlishly, “The day that filming started, I took a picture with him and obtained his autograph.
I’m super happy.”

“As long as you’re happy.” Yan Qing Chi said warmly.
Since Jiang Mo Chen was the original novel’s Gong, it was really not unusual for an extra character like Su Nuan—the type who Yan Qing Chi didn’t notice when he read the novel—to like him.

Su Nuan turned shy from his words.
At the same time, she felt that she was a little starry-eyed.
Hence, she didn’t speak anymore; instead, she focused on watching Jiang Mo Chen act.

When Jiang Mo Chen’s scene was done and Ji Si Xing left, it was Zhao Qiang’s turn to act together with Jiang Mo Chen.
Yan Qing Chi and Su Nuan then quietly left to find a quiet place to rehearse their lines.

As soon as Jiang Mo Chen turned his head, he saw him and Su Nuan leave while chatting happily.
A profound emotion suddenly filled his heart.
He looked at Su Nuan and thought to himself, “Who’s this? Why are the two of them leaving together?” Guan Mei didn’t follow Yan Qing Chi and stay here with the production crew because he was here, then what about this girl’s manager? Why aren’t they watching their own artist? And Yan Qing Chi.
How many days has it been? He’s already on such good terms with the rest of the people on the production crew?

Jiang Mo Chen felt that he was quite restless.
Only when Zhao Qiang called him did he come back to his senses.
Curbing his thoughts, he got ready to film.

Meanwhile, the Yan Qing Chi who he had been thinking of was currently correcting Su Nuan’s pronunciation, “Teng!”

“Ten?”

“Teng!”

“Teng?”

“That’s right, teng!”

“Teng!” Su Nuan said with a stronger intonation.

Yan Qing Chi nodded and Su Nuan let out a sigh of relief.
She incessantly repeated “Teng…Teng…Teng”.6

Yan Qing Chi waited until she was done practicing before he continued reading through her scenes with her.
Aside from her struggle with pre-velar nasal sounds which was due to her personal issues, Su Nuan’s grasp on her emotions and dialogue weren’t bad.
After she and Yan Qing Chi did a run-through of her scenes, she wanted to return the favor and rehearse Meng Luo’s scenes with him.

Yan Qing Chi glanced at the time on his phone, “Maybe next time.
It’s almost time to eat.”

Su Nuan nodded, “Alright then, thank you.”

“No problem.”

“When I go back tonight, I will properly practice the pronunciation.”

“Okay.”

“Teng…Teng…Teng.” Su Nuan repeated once more.

Just as Yan Qing Chi was about to give his affirmation, he heard a familiar voice interject, “What are you two doing?”

Yan Qing Chi lifted his head to see Jiang Mo Chen looking at him with a cold expression.

Footnotes

I just learned that this is an idiom (势均力敌).跃跃欲试 (yuèyuèyùshì)- An idiom meaning eager to give sb(somebody) a try.只是他戏份少咖位(ka wei) 小.
This translation is different than the Chinese raw (撇了撇嘴) which literally means something along the lines of “twitched her mouth”.
Based on the mental image I have reading this, “wrinkled her nose in distaste” seemed the appropriate English equivalent. The Chinese raw described it as Liu Jia Ni not having many ”explosive points” (爆点 bao dian), which means that there are no traits or points that will make the character stand out/explode in popularity.
This is what Su Nuan is repeating (and what Yan Qing Chi is helping her with): 腾腾腾 (teng teng teng).
