The title of this chapter probably is enough warning for what’s about to happen.

Liao Si Bo was momentarily at a loss for words due to his question.
Nevertheless, he didn’t intend on bickering with Jiang Mo Chen, so he merely said, “Let’s talk somewhere private.”

Seeing that he had a solemn expression on his face, Jiang Mo Chen thought about how he himself had been giving the other man the cold shoulder for so long.
He reckoned that it was time to make things clear.
Thus, he got to his feet and led Liao Si Bo to the parking lot not too far from their position.

Jiang Mo Chen opened the door to his nanny car and took a seat, “Say it, what are you here for?”

Liao Si Bo also took a seat.
He closed the door and questioned, “Jiang Mo Chen, are you seriously intending to break off ties with me? During this period of time, you don’t pick up my calls nor do you answer my WeChat messages.
Are you really going to renounce our childhood friendship for a man?”

Jiang Mo Chen sneered, “Oh, so you still remember that we grew up together.
And here I thought that you and Yuan Ming Xu were the ones who had grown up together.”

“What do you mean by that?” Liao Si Bo was a little ill at ease.

“What do I mean by that?” Jiang Mo Chen countered, “Before you guys met Yan Qing Chi, did I or did I not tell you guys ‘this is my spouse; everyone be more polite to him when you see him’? And what did you do? You immediately made things difficult for him, lashing out at him.
Liao Si Bo, you are 28 years old this year—not 8 years old.
Are you not aware of the consequences of your words? It just so happened that he had a strong personality.
Otherwise, if it had been someone who was a little softer and weaker who was subjected to the words that you had said, he probably would have up and left, unable to stay any longer.”

“Yeah, but didn’t I apologize to him?”

“You apologized because he won and you had no other choice.
If he hadn’t won, or if he hadn’t played pool with you, would you still apologize to him?”

Liao Si Bo didn’t answer.

Jiang Mo Chen harrumphed, “So, you only apologized because you lost.
It wasn’t because you realized the harm that your words inflicted onto others, nor was it because you realized that—as my friend—you shouldn’t be speaking to my partner like that.
No, you only did it because you lost and had no other choice.”

Liao Si Bo grinded his teeth and raised his head to look at him, “That’s right.
Everything you have said is right.
But why should I apologize to him? It’s not like I like him.
Can’t I just find him vexing? In the past, we never had a falling out when I didn’t like someone or when I didn’t have a good opinion of someone.
What’s so special about him?”

“Can that possibly be the same?! He’s married to me.
Am I married to everyone else?!”

“That’s where the problem lies; he’s just like everyone else—not someone from our circle and a stranger to us.
The only difference is that he got married to you.
But you two only registered your marriage.
Besides, it’s not like you like him.
There is no need for you to be so defensive about him.”

“Do you have sh*t for brains, Liao Si Bo?” Jiang Mo Chen truly could not comprehend the other man’s thought process.
He ended up cussing him out [in his exasperation], “Is the marriage certificate something so trivial? Since the two of us have registered our marriage, we are a married couple.
Do you not know what ‘married couple’ means? If someone scolded your mom in front of your dad, would your dad let him leave with all his limbs intact? Don’t tell me that your parents are childhood sweethearts whereas the two of us (JMC & YQC) don’t have any feelings between us.
It’s all the same.
It’s the same process of getting the marriage certificate from the Civil Affairs Bureau, the same concept of sharing the good and bad times, the prosperity and hardships together.
Do you understand?”

Liao Si Bo was stunned.
He didn’t speak.

“You said the things you did the other day for no reason other than1 because he (YQC) wasn’t Yuan Ming Xu, so you thought that I shouldn’t have married2 him.
Moreover, since I used to like Yuan Ming Xu, I should have married him instead.
Do I have that right?”

“Isn’t that how it should be?”

“Of course not.” Jiang Mo Chen said coldly, “Feelings shouldn’t be obligations3.
Certainly, I used to like him.
I gave him subtle hints; I even gave him blatant signs4.
But he ignored them because he liked Zhou Yi Xing.
He even went so far as to give up the role that I introduced him to in favor of flying overseas after Zhou Yi Xing.
So why should I stay rooted in this ‘spot’ and wait for his return5?”

He looked at Liao Si Bo, “Why did I want to get married? Because I didn’t want to think of and spend my time on someone I shouldn’t.
If I’m married, then I will have a family6.
I will have responsibilities and duties.
Additionally, I can shift my gaze that had been on him all this time onto someone else.
So what are you scolding Yan Qing Chi for? What’s the point of doing that? From beginning to end, I was the one who acted on my own initiative.
He merely appeared at the right time and at the right place.
Even if it wasn’t him, there would be someone else.
If you really wanted to scold someone, shouldn’t you be scolding me instead?”

“Besides,” Jiang Mo Chen continued, “what right do you have to scold others? My parents agreed to it, so why are you against it? Because I married Yan Qing Chi and gave up on Yuan Ming Xu? Liao Si Bo, I’m the one who’s been your friend since we were kids.
You may consider Yuan Ming Xu to be your friend too, but when it comes down to who’s supposed to be ‘closer’ and ‘more distant’7 to you, I should be the one you side with.”

Liao Si Bo opened his mouth, doing his best to justify himself, “You and Ming Xu are both my friends.
I know you like him and he is worthy of that.
I hope that you two can be together.
This way, he will also be a bit happier.”

“So my happiness doesn’t matter?”

“Of course that’s not it.”

“But what you said, and what you did, convey this.”

“I just don’t get it.
Since you liked him (YMX), why’d you suddenly get married? And with someone who we didn’t even know, to boot.
I think that this is somewhat careless.
I’m afraid that you will regret it afterwards.
At that time, it’s not good for you and Ming Xu.”

“I won’t regret it.” Jiang Mo Chen said adamantly, “Since I’ve decided to marry him, I’ve considered all the consequences.
I won’t regret it.”

“What if you do?”

“If that day does come, then I’ll think about it then.
However, since it hasn’t happened yet, all of these hypotheticals are meaningless.”

“When that time comes, it’ll be too late.”

“Nevertheless, that’s not something that you need to worry about.
I assume responsibility for my own decisions.
If the two of us are able to be together for the rest of our lives, then that would be ideal.
If a problem does crop up, then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
There’s no point in thinking up baseless scenarios at this point of time.”

“But at that time, you might not be able to be together with Ming Xu.”

“So what? Even now, it’s impossible for me to be together with him.”

Liao Si Bo was stumped for words, “You’re serious.”

“From the moment that Yan Qing Chi and I received our marriage certificate, there was zero possibility that I would be together with Yuan Ming Xu.
The upbringing I’ve received since young will not permit me to have an extramarital affair.
My family as well will not allow me to be dishonorable.
If an issue comes up in our marriage, that problem will absolutely not stem from me, do you understand!”

Liao Si Bo didn’t say anything else.
He stared at Jiang Mo Chen.
After a good while, he finally stated his purpose for coming with a hoarse voice, “Ming Xu has come back.
His flight is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
He knew that you were filming here and deliberately chose this place as his final destination.
He hopes that you can go pick him up.”

Jiang Mo Chen was somewhat taken aback, “Wasn’t he supposed to stay there for two more months before coming back?”

“I don’t know, but my guess is that it’s got something to do with you getting married.”

Liao Si Bo stared at Jiang Mo Chen, “Are you free tomorrow?

“No.” Jiang Mo Chen replied steadily.

“Then can you make some time to come?”

“No.”

“You know full well tha—”

“—I don’t.” Jiang Mo Chen cut him off, “I don’t know why he suddenly wants to come back, nor do I want to take leave just to go pick him up.
Liao Si Bo, from now on, there’s no need for you to come out of your way to tell me about his matters.
It’s got nothing to do with me.”

“How can you be so cold-hearted!”

Jiang Mo Chen snorted, “Is this your first day getting to know me? Haven’t I always been a ‘cold-hearted’ person?”

Liao Si Bo looked at him and fell silent.
Indeed, hadn’t Jiang Mo Chen always been like this? Gentle yet indifferent8.
Aside from when there were people or matters related to him, the rest of the time, he simply observed coldly and objectively from the sidelines.
However, he (LSB) hadn’t thought that there would come a day that Yuan Ming Xu would also become one of the people who Jiang Mo Chen treated with a detached attitude.

Liao Si Bo was quite befuddled and dismayed.
He always knew that Jiang Mo Chen liked Yuan Ming Xu.
He also knew that he too had a sliver of feelings for Yuan Ming Xu.
However, he never thought about coming in-between them.
To him, Jiang Mo Chen was his friend.
They had grown up together, and he would never do anything to let the other man down.
That was why he was willing to pair them up.
He thought that they would be great together.
Yet now, to say nothing of how Yuan Ming Xu liked Zhou Yi Xing, even Jiang Mo Chen had someone new9.
Liao Si Bo suddenly felt that the notion he had had and his efforts to pair them (JMC & YMX) up were so pathetic and ridiculous.

When he saw the other man fall silent, Jiang Mo Chen was also at a loss for words for some time.
He was quiet for a while before opening his mouth, calm yet earnest, “We’ve probably known each other for about ten-something-twenty years—since first grade of primary school.
Despite having different personalities and whatnot, we grew up showing tolerance for one another.
I think of you as my friend.
That’s why I’m so angry.
I do not wish to, nor do I want to, see anything like this happen again.
I don’t ask for you to like him; however, even if you don’t like him, don’t show it in front of him.
That’s too offensive.
Do you understand?”

Liao Si Bo nodded.

“Give him a proper apology later and we’ll turn the page on this matter.
Next time we meet, if you’re able to speak to him civilly, then come.
If not, then give me a heads-up and we won’t go.
That way, we don’t have to make it awkward and uncomfortable for everyone when we meet up.”

“There’s no need to go that far.
Since I’ve promised you, I won’t put him on the spot anymore.
That day, I drank alcohol and harbored anger in my heart.
At the same time, I couldn’t understand.
I couldn’t understand how things became like this without rhyme or reason; that was why I spoke so rashly.”

“Then you certainly spoke ‘very rashly’ indeed.”

Liao Si Bo chuckled, “He wasn’t one to be outdone either.
Here I thought he was a pushover, yet he turned out to be a ruthless one.
He spoke so eloquently.
His words were powerful and he had rational justification.
At the time, I was a little intimidated.”

Jiang Mo Chen could relate, “Yeah.
With regard to him, all the reasoning in this realm probably have the same surname as he does.
He will make quips that will render you speechless, not to mention when he is on the side of reason.”

“You seem to hold him in high esteem?” Hearing the laughter in his tone, Liao Si Bo almost couldn’t believe his ears.

“Do I?” Jiang Mo Chen glanced at him out of the side of his eye, “I’m clearly fed up with him.”

“Your tone and your expression sure don’t look like you are fed up with him though,” Liao Si Bo internally criticized.

“C’mon then.
It’s rare that you dropped by, so I’ll treat you to a meal.” Jiang Mo Chen concluded as he prepared to get out of the car.

Liao Si Bo asked, “Do we invite him too?”

“Obviously.
How else would you apologize?”

Liao Si Bo scratched his head, somewhat at a loss for words.

“Don’t fret.
Don’t look at his gift for repartee.
He may seem like a smart aleck10, but he’s actually a pretty good guy.
He didn’t take what happened that night personally, much less hold it against you.
As long as you don’t stir up trouble, I guarantee that he will not hit your face11.”

Liao Si Bo was speechless, “Then I thank him.”

“You certainly ought to thank him.” Jiang Mo Chen agreed.

Liao Si Bo: “……” And you’re telling me that you don’t ‘hold him in high esteem’?!

Footnotes

This is JMC making a conclusion from what he inferred from LSB’s words and actions.
LSB didn’t explicitly say that it was because YQC wasn’t YMX.
Since I have another tln later, I’ll just leave the whole line here:     “你那天说了那么多,无非是觉得他不是元明煦,觉得我不该娶他,觉得我曾经喜欢元明煦,所以应该娶元明煦对吧?” This “marry” (娶) is the one that is used for the bride (usually), like “to take a wife / to marry (a woman)”.
Of course, it doesn’t necessarily mean the other party is female or that the female is the one being married in.
It’s also used now to refer to the party that is marrying into the family (excluding those who are marrying into the family completely, meaning that they do not have a maiden family supporting them).没有什么感情是必须我是喜欢过他,暗示过他,甚至也明示过他.
I really like this part, because it shows that he did it both subtly and blatantly by the juxtaposition of shadow and light.
’那我为什么还要死守在原地,等他回来呢?’ From this question, ‘死守在原地’ means something like staying where you are and guarding this one spot.
In this context, JMC is questioning why he should “stay where he was”.
He is asking LSB, “Why should I stand here and wait for YMX to turn back and look at me? Why can’t I move on?” 结了婚,就有了家庭 [rest omitted].
Focusing on the last two characters “家庭”, this means “family / household”.
In this context, I translated it as ‘family’, but it’s used in the sense of “I have someone who I am in a relationship with and so I’m taken”.
亲疏温柔却冷漠 (wēnróuquèlěngmò).
Something I think is interesting about the word choice here is that the “温” ( wēn) in “温柔” (wēnróu) means “warm” and the “冷” (lěng) in  “冷漠” (lěngmò) means “cold”.
This contrast in temperatures probably helps to contribute to the description of JMC’s nature (though this is just my opinion).
可是现在,元明煦那边有一个一直喜欢的周以行不说,就连江默宸也有了新的牵绊.
Please let me know if you think there is a better way to translate this part.
牵绊 (qiānbàn) –  to bind / to yoke / to impede.
I think it’s probably like “new ties” or something that he is tied to/down by (think strings of fate).
‘别看他伶牙俐齿的,其实人挺好的’.
Full disclosure: you could probably say I “added” more words to the original text since I translated this one sentence into two (this sentence and the previous one).
But I felt that this would more effectively convey what JMC meant.
And well, I also don’t deny that I couldn’t figure out a better way to translate “伶牙俐齿的” in this context. He’s referring to YQC faceslapping LSB.
